Southwark Cathedral

Ultra-low budget  |  Event lighting  |  Switched On London

London Borough of Southwark

Southwark, London

In 2007, LAPD took part in a landmark lighting event named Switched On London.

A selection of London landmarks, each assigned to a lighting consultancy, received a new lighting scheme.  Because budgets were extremely tight, most schemes used the existing lighting, supplemented with portable luminaires where necessary.

Our concept was to evoke the beginnings of the cathedral, where candles were the only sources of light.  Therefore we used coloured filters on all of the existing floodlighting to replicate the colours of a flame.  We used blue at the bottom, moving through red to orange at the top, therefore transforming the cathedral.

Each evening of the event culminated in a drinks and canapés reception. Ours took place within the cathedral.  We invited clients, industry colleagues, friends and family to wrap up warmly and experience the transformative power of light.
